What is a W-2?

In order to begin your tax return, you will need a W-2. This form is prepared by your employer. Please note that you will only receive a W-2 if you’re an employee, not a contractor.

Your employer has a deadline to provide you this form by no later than Jan 31, 2019. If you have not received it by the deadline, please contact your employer – you can’t prepare your tax return without it!

Your employer also sends the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) a copy of your W-2. Make sure you don’t lie about information on your tax return because it’s a crime!

As seen below, a W-2 provides information on your salaries/wages, federal/state taxes, along with social security and medicare taxes.
